قال الله تعالى : {أَمْ لَمْ يُعْرَفُوا رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ} [سورة المؤمنون: 69]
فقد أمرنا الله تعالى باتباع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم والأخذ بما جاء به، وذلك في نصوص قطعية مثل قوله تعالى: {لقد كان لكم في رسول الله أسوة حسنة} [الأحزاب: 21]. وكيف يمكن اتباع الأسوة دون معرفة سيرتها وخُلقها؟ إذن فمعرفة شمائله هي الطريق العملي لتنزيل أمر الاتباع.
إذ جعل الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم حبه واتباع سنته علامة على صحة الإيمان، كما في الحديث: «لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى أكون أحب إليه من والده وولده والناس أجمعين». والمحبة الحقيقية تقتضي المعرفة والاقتداء، فلا يعقل أن تحب من لا تعرف طريقته في العيش والتعامل والعبادة.
كما أن الإيمان بهذا النبي الكريم يتطلب من العباد أن يعرفوا فضل هذا النبي ، ورفعة مستواه على غيره، وما أسبغ الله تعالى عليه من الكمالات النفسية ، وما أدبه من الآداب الكريمة الرضية ، وما وهبه من الخُلق العظيم والخلق الحسن الكريم، وما أبدع فيه سبحانه من المحاسن ، وجمع فيه مجامع الكمالات، فجعل جوهره الكريم عاليا على سائر الأفراد والأجناس ، بحيث لا ينقاس بغيره من الناس.
