والسمة هي استعداد ميلي ثابت نسبيًا إلى نوع معين من السلوك، الذي يبدو أثره في كثير من المواقف؛ فمثلًا المثابرة هي الاستعداد للاستمرار في العمل رغم صعوبته، والسيطرة هي استعداد وميل للتحكم والظهور الدائم. وقد تتغير ا لا يمكننا الحكم على سمات الشخصية من المظهر الخارجي، بل يجب أن نأخذ نظرة تحليلية لمعرفة سمات الشخصية وأبعادها، مثل وجود عقدة نقص أو القدرة على تحمل الشدائد وغيره.
