«الشاعر الطموح» هي قصة تجمع بين دفتيها مَجْمَعًا نَفِيْسًا للأمثال؛ فهي تروي لنا سيرة أبي الطيب المتنبي، الشاعر المُعذَّب في قطف ثمار الطموح الشعري والنبل الأخلاقي، وتوضح لنا الوشاية التي تعرَّض لها المتنبي من لدُن خصومه، والتي أفضت إلى القطيعة بينه وبين سيف الدولة الحمداني، وقد برع «علي الجارم» في إجلاء ضروب الحكمة التي ترقرقرت في صورة ماء فيَّاض ينحدر من معين الشعر الصادق الذي صاغه المتنبي، وكأن لسان حال شعر أبي الطيب يقول: أنَّ النبل والشرف، والإباء، والأنَفَة سماتُ لشاعرٍ شريف كُتِبَ عليه أن يوأَدَ في قبور الصراع البشري الآثم، وتوضح لنا القصة أنَّ الشعر سمة لا توهَب إلا لأصحاب السرائر والقلوب الطاهرة النقية، لأن الشعر ينهل من منهل روحانيٍ وجداني، ومُحال أن يجتمع الصدق والكذب في قلبٍ شاعريٍ واحد، ويخرج لفظًا شعريًا وجيهًا في مغزاه ومعناه؛ تلك هي الرسالة التي أراد المتنبي أن يخلدها شرفًا محفورًا على جبين الوجدان، رسالة برى صاحبها وخلّده شعره في آفاق الأزمان.
