يغطي الكتاب أحداث قرنين من الزمان واصفاً عملية انبعاث هوية عربية إسلامية في هذا البلد الواقع على مفترق الطرق مع العالم الإفريقي. تتناول بعد ذلك عملية بناء الدولة الحديثة المنبثقة عن التركية (الإدارة العثمانية)، ومن المهدية (توجه إسلامي اعتقد بظهور المهدي المنتظر وأفضى إلى حدوث واحدة من أكثر الثورات المناهضة للاستعمار في القرن التاسع عشر إثارة للعجب) وأخيراً، وبعد الإستقلال أدت الثورات التي لم يحالفها النجاح (انتفاضتي الجماهير المعروفة، وثورة الضباط الأحرار) فضلاً عن تداعيات عقود متتبعة من الجنوح، إلى هدم صرح (مجتمع مدني) من بين أكثر المجتمعات استعداداً وتجهيزاً على صعيد القارة كلها.
وبينما تمضي عملية المفاوضات مع ممثلي التمرد المسلح في الجنوب، وينعتق النظام متحرراً تدريجياً من رقبة نفوذ التأسلم، متقرباً من الغرب الذي تجدد اهتمامه بما تمتلكه البلاد من نفط، يذكرنا "آلان جريش" بالمناسبة في تقديمه للكتاب، أن الخرطوم التي قبلت تسليم الإرهابي "كارلوس" لفرنسا عام 1994 كانت قد عرضت أيضاً تسليم "أسامة بن لادن" الذي لجأ إلى السودان في مطلع التسعينات، ولكن واشنطن رفضت حينذاك هذه الصفقة.
