يستطيعُ الأديبُ حينما يرسم بأدبه الأحداثَ التاريخيَّة الهامَّة، أن يجعلنا نشعرُ بأننا نعاصرُ الحدثَ ونحيا فيه. هذا هو ما قام به (علي الجارم) حينما صوَّر إحدى حلقات الصراع بين الدولتين العباسيَّة (في عهد الخليفة الرشيد) والبيزنطيَّة (في عهد كلا من ريني، ونقفور الأول). وفي خِضَمِّ هذا الصراع العسكري تتجلى شجاعةُ (نزار) الذي ترك محبوبته (حفصة) ملبيًا نداء الحرب؛ فحقق الكثير من البطولات، ولكنَّ البيزنطيين تكاثروا عليه وأسروه. وفي القصر أُعجبت به الإمبراطورة وحاولت أن تستميله إليها ولكنَّه أبى فسجنته. ويستمرُّ الصراع العباسي–البيزنطي، ويستطيع (نزار) أن يطَّلع على خطة البيزنطيين فيهرب من سجنه بمساعدة (هيلين) بنت كبير البطارقة التي أحبته، ويحذر المسلمين من خطة الروم، ويفتح (هرقلة) ويعود إلى حفصة التي تاقت لرؤيته.
