جومبا لاهيري، كاتبة أمريكية من أصل هندي، من مواليد 11 يوليو 1967 ، صدرت مجموعتها القصصية الأولى سنة 2000 بعنوان "مفسرة الأمراض" وحصلت بها على جائزة بولتزر المرموقة.
واقتبست روايتها The Namesake في فيلم سينمائي شهير.
تصدر لها قريبا رواية "الأرض المنخفضة"،

تحكي رواية السمي قصة أشوك وأشيما غانغولي، اللذين يرزقان بابنهما الأول عام 1968، وحتى تتمكن أشيما من مغادرة المشفى في كيمبردج - ماساشوسيتس، كان لزاماً منح الطفل اسماً رسمياً، لتسجيله في وثيقة الميلاد.
يطلق الأب أشوك اسم "غوغول" على طفله، تيمناً بالكاتب الروسي نيقولاي غوغول، وبذلك يخالف تقليداً بنغالياً ينص على أن تقوم الجدة في الهند بإختيار الإسم.
ويعود إختيار الإسم إلى أن كتاباً قصصياً للكتاب وغوغول كان السبب وراء إنقاذ حياة أشوك، عندما أصيب - في مقتبل شبابه - إصابةً بالغةً أقعدته عاماً كاملاً.
يدرك غوغول أن اسمه غريب ولا يعجبه، وينزعج أيضاً من تمسك والديه بالعادات والتقاليد البنغالية، لذلك يتبنى نمط الحياة الأمريكية وثقافتها، مما يثير حفيظة والديه، فيغير اسمه الرسمي قبل التحاقه بجامعة ييل، ليصبح "نيكيل" في وثائق الدولة الرسمية، وتتابع المؤلفة رسم أحداث الرواية، وما جرى لنيكيل (غوغول) في مجتمع النخبة النيويوركي، وكيف هرب من هويته وإستعادها ثانية.
