لقد شهدتُ في آخر لقاء معه وتسجيل حديثه أنَّ الرجلَ منهكٌ وغير قادر على مواصلة صراع الزمن والبقاء حيّاً سنة أخرى، أو حتى شهر آخر، هو الذي صارع، وقاتل، وسخر، وانتصر فما عاد للقدر بطاقة صفراء أو حمراء يشهرها بوجهه.
مبارياته مع الحياة أغلبها انتهت بفوزه، وأظهرته، بناء على ما كتب، وما سعمت عنه، وما رواه مسكوباً من فمه، لاعباً متميزاً، تمكَّن بفعل مهارات عقلية، ولياقة نفسية، وروح دعابة من الفوز في كل مباراة دخلها مع الأقدار الحاصلة والمواقف المستَجدّة... لم تثنه خسارة، ولم يستسلم لهزيمة.
ولا تراجع حتى عن قرار أو تصميم عزم على تنفيذه إلى نهايته، ولا شعر يوماً بانه لم ينهل من عسل الدنيا بما يكفي، كثيراً ما يشبّه نفسه بعروة ابن الورد أيام كان شاباً؛ وآخر أيامه كان يقول: أنا مالك بن الريب، ويروح يتمتم بشيء من الجزع والمرارة: "أَجَبْتُ الْهَوَى لَمّا دَعَائيّ بزَفْرَةٍ... تَقنّعَتِ مِنْهَا أن أُلَــامَ رِدَائياً"... "أَقُوْلُ لَأَصْحَابيْ ارْفَعُوْنِيْ لَــأَنني... يَقُرّ بَعَيْنَي أَنْ سُهَيْلٌ بَدَا لِيَا"... "خُذَانِيْ فَجُرّانِيُ ببُرْدِيَ إِلَيْكُمَا... فَقَدْ كُنتَ قَبْلَ الْيَوْمَ صَعْبَا قِيَادِيْا".
