العروض بالمعنى الاصطلاحي: هو قواعد تدل على ميزان يعرف به صحيح أوزان الشعر العربي من فاسدها، والغرض من دراسة العروض هو معرفة مذاهب العرب في صناعة الشعر وتحديد أوزانه المختلفة، ومعرفة أخطائه وعثراته وعلله إذا وقعت فيه. وهذا الكتاب يعالج هذا الموضوع المتوارث الذي أسسه علماء العربية منذ القديم، ووصل إلينا معقداً منظماً، إلا أنه كثيراً ما يعتريه الغموض والتعقر في تناول المسائل العروضية والشعرية بحيث يصبح العمل فيها عملاً مركباً يحتاج إلى جهد غير قليل في التحليل والمقارنة والاستنتاج.
ويقدمه الباحث في هذا الكتاب بوصفه صيغة (مسهّلة) لمعالجة البيت الشعري من جهة، والجزء الذي ينبني عليه البيت من جهة ثانية، وجزئيات الجزء من جهة ثالثة بحيث يقوم هذا الكتاب مقام الكتب القديمة في شأن علم العروض، لكن بأسلوب علمي يجعل البحث مبسطاً، شيقاً محبباً، وذلك بتفكيك ما تداخل، وتفسير ما تجاهل، وتفنيد المسائل وترتيبها، لتكون أرضاً لينة مثمرة لكل طالب علم.
