هوارد فيليبس لافكرافت، كاتب الرعب الأشهر على الإطلاق، ولعل شهرته تعود لكونه مبتكرًا نوعًا من الرعب يسمى بالرعب الكوني Cosmic Horror والكائنات القديمة، مثل كثولو وداجون وغيرهم من شخصيات لافكرافت وأعماله المميزة، حتى أصبح فرعًا من الأدب يحمل اسم كثولو ميثوس Cthulhu Mythos أو ميثولوجيا كثولو، حيث يكتب العديد من المؤلفين في نفس العالم المخيف الذي صنعه لافكرافت.
ولكن أولى حكايات كثولو والتي تحمل عنوان "نداء كثولو" كتبها لافكرافت سنة 1926 بعدما تمكن من قلمه، ونضج أسلوبه الأدبي، وتأثر بالعديد من الأدباء مثل لورد دونساني وآرثر ماكين وألرجنون بلاكوود، أما في بدايته فقد تأثر لافكرافت أكثر بإدجار آلان بو ونوع الرعب الذي يطلق عليه اسم Macabre المتعلق أكثر بالأماكن المهجورة والأشباح والموت، وتعد قصة "الخيميائي" هي أول قصة نشرها لافكرافت، عام 1916 ولكنه كتبها قبل ذلك بعدة سنوات عام 1908 وهو ما بين السابعة عشر والثامنة عشر من عمره، ورغم أنها أولى أعماله إلا أنها تحمل الكثير من ملامح قصص لافكرافت المميزة، مثل العلم المحرم كالخيمياء والسحر الأسود، والمصير المحتوم، وكون الإنسان قد يرث لعنة نسله، والصراعات العرقية والطبقية، والأمور الخارقة للطبيعة، وهي العناصر التي تكررت في كثير من قصصه بعد ذلك، حتى بعدما بدأ في كتابة ميثولوجيا كثولو بعد ذلك.
ورغم كون الخيميائي أولى أعمال لافكرافت إلا أنها لم تحظى بالاهتمام الكافي، حتى في أوساط المهتمين بأدب الرعب الكلاسيكي، ولم تترجم إلى العربية حتى اليوم، لذا قررت ترجمتها لكي يستطيع القارئ العربي الاستمتاع بها، وأن يخوض رحلة في عقل لافكرافت الشاب المراهق، ويعرف كيف بدأ هذا الكاتب العبقري مسيرته في كتابة أدب الرعب.
