في هذا الكتاب يصف لنا دانتي حبه العذري لبياتريشي، والتي لم تكن تعلم بهذه العواطف الجياشة التي يحملها دانتي لها، والذي ألَّف هذا الكتاب بعد موتها وسرد فيه ذكرياته التي كانت عبارة عن مجموعة من الأشعار القصيرة التي أرفقها بشرح للمناسبة التي ألَّفها بها. وقد التقى دانتي بياتريشي، في مدينة فلورنسة وهو يُنهي عامه التاسع، وكانت هي تدخل عامها التاسع (واسمها الحقيقيّ بيتشي دي فولكو بورتيناري، تزوجت من سيموني دي باردي وتوفيت في سن السادسة والعشرين). ونحن لا نعلم إلا القليل عن قصة الحب التي جمعت الشاعر وملهمته، والتي رفع من شأنها كتاب فيتا نووفا، الذي يرجح أكثر من مؤرخ أنه كتب بين 1292 و1293. هذا الكتاب الذي ظلّ حتى القرن التاسع عشر "ضحيَّة" الكوميديا الإلهيّة.
