موضوع الكتاب ، الذي يرى مؤلفه أن كل عشيرة هي عالم مصغَّر يلخص عالم البشر كله ، حتى لو تباين التركيب الوراثي الدقيق ، هذا التباين بين أي فردين عشوائيين داخل أي عشيرة واحدة ، يبلغ (85%) من التباين بين أي فردين اختيرا عشوائيـًا من عشيرة البشر بالعالم كله ، إن البيانات الوراثية للعشائر الموجودة ، والجينات وتكرار الجينات ، تعتبران من أكثر المصادر ثراءً للمعلومات التطورية ، أي التي تدل على تاريخ تطور الإنسان . ويفاجئنا المؤلف بسؤال عن موعد ظهور الجلد الأبيض ؟ ويقول إنه ليس من المستحيل أن يكون قد نشأ في أفريقيا ذاتها سواء في شمالها أو في الشمال والشرق معـًا ، وأنه ليس لدينا ما يكفي من المعلومات حول الجينات المسؤولة عن لون الجلد ، سوى أن هناك على الأقل ثلاثة جينات أو أربعة هي المسؤولة عن ذلك ، ويقول إن الأوروبيين هم نتيجة المزج الوراثي الناجم ، - على أغلب الظن - عن هجرات من القارتين المجاورتين ، أفريقيا وآسيا ، فإذا ما حاولنا تحديد التركيب المضبوط لهذا الخليط ، فسيكون الأوروبيون خليطـًا ثلثيه آسيوي ، والثلث أفريقي ، وأن البيانات تقترح موعداً بعيداً في حدود 30 ألف عام . وعن اللغة البشرية ، يقول المؤلف ، إنها وصلت إلى حالتها الراهنة من التطور منذ (50-150) ألف عام ، وقد بلغت حوالي خمسة آلاف لغة أو أكثر ، وأن لها نفس المرونة ، ولها نفس إمكانيات التعبير . وأن كل البشر من ذوي الذكاء المتوسط ، يمكن أن يتقنوا أي لغة إذا ما بدأوا في عمر مبكر ، أما بعد عمر خمس أو ست سنوات ، فيكاد يستحيل أن يتقن الطفل لغة جديدة ويتحدثها بفصاحة .
