تتحدث هذه الرواية عن الإنسان، بفقره وضعفه وآلامه، بأخطائه وخطاياه، تتحدث عن العمال الموسميين «الجَنْقُو» الذين تركوا قراهم الفقيرة بحثًا عن لقمة العيش وأملًا في العودة بثروة صغيرة تغير حياتهم، وفي سبيل ذلك يقبلون أن تطحنهم تروس الحياة الخشنة مرات ومرات، في مزارع السكر وحقول السمسم والمصانع ذات الآلات الرثَّة، فتتغير أعمالهم وأسماؤهم خلال شهور السنة؛ فهم «الجنقو» و«الفَحامين» و«كَاتَاكو» دون أن يغيب عنهم الشقاء لحظة، فلا يجدون مهربًا إلا قرية «الحلة» حيث تُغرَق الآمال والهموم في أقداح الخمور الرخيصة وأدخنة الحشيش السيئ التي يتشاركونها في الليالي الطويلة مع نساء بائسات يعرضن أجسادهن لقاء قروش قليلة، وبدلًا من أن يعود «الجنقو» مرة أخرى لأهليهم بعد شهور العمل الشاق يقررون أن يبقوا في الحلة، فمالهم تبدَّد وكذلك شطر كبير من العمر.
