يوضح المؤلف سبب اختياره لموضوع هذا الكتاب بقوله: ألفت هذا الكتاب في بداية عام 1990م لعدّة أسباب، فقد اعتقدت أنه من المهم أن نخطط لحقل قد نسميه الآن "دراسات الجسد" وأن نسلط الضوء على مصادر نظرية راهنة تقدر أهمية الجسد الاجتماعية، أيضاً سعيت لتطوير اتجاه نظري واسع تجاه الجسدية يحمل مادية الجسدية البشرية على محمل الجدّ، واخترت أن أقوم بهذا بالركون إلى أعمال كل من بيير بورديو وأنتوني جيدن وأعمال نوربرت إلياس الأكثر أهمية، وقد سعيت أن أؤسس تحليلياً على ثلاثة محاور مركزية تحاكي أصداء نقاشات راهنة في المجال، وتؤكد أبعاداً متميزة من المحاولات المستمرة لبناء علم اجتماع جسدي بشكل متكامل، وهذه المحاور هي الجسد الحاضر الغائب في الفكر الاجتماعي، والعلاقة بين الجسد والهوية الذاتية، والسؤال عن كيف نطور نظرياً دراسة الجسد في المجتمع.
