فهو بمثابة كتاب الفقه الحنبلي الأول، ونظرًا لأن أقوال الإمام أحمد بمثابة فتاوى في أغلبها فتجدها متفرعة ولو اتبعنا تقسيمها على حالها لكانت فروعًا ومسائل كثيرة جدًّا، لذلك راعينا عند تقسيم المسائل جمع عدة روايات تحت المسألة الواحدة وقد يحتاج ذلك إلى صيغة عامة لعنوان المسألة. وبالرغم من محاولتنا الالتزام بالترتيب الفقهي عند الحنابلة، إلا أننا قدمنا الترتيب الفقهي المنطقي العام بما يوافق تسلسل المسائل في الكتاب الواحد؛ ليسهل الوصول للمسألة بصرف النظر عن مذهب الباحث، كما أن هذه الطريقة تيسر إدراج ما يظهر من أقوال ليست هنا دون الإخلال بالترتيب أو ترقيم المسائل، كما يسهل إتمام أي قول فقدنا بعضه رغمًا عنا.
