من بين سلسلة المحاضرات التي حملت اسم السيد روبرت ريد ألقى تشارلز بيرسي سنو في العام 1959 م محاضرته الذائعة الصيت ((الثقافتان)) التي جاءت انعكاسا للأوضاع السائدة على الساحة الأكاديمية آنذاك، وكانت المحاضرة تستند إلى فرضية ترى أن الاهتمامات الفكرية قد انشطرت إلى نمطين من أنماط الثقافة : أولهما ثقافة الفنون والآداب والعلوم الإنسانية وثانيهما ثقافة العلوم الطبيعية. ومنذ ذلك الحين تزايد الاهتمام بنوع ثالث من الأنساق الثقافية أطلق عليه اسم ((العلوم الاجتماعية))، ويشتمل على مجالات علم الاجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا والعلوم السياسية والاقتصادية والنفسية. وتعد دراسة جيروم كيغان توصيفا للتصورات والأفكار والإنجازات المتعلقة بكل واحدة من هذه الثقافات، ويسعى المؤلف لإثبات أن المعاني المتأصلة في العديد من المفاهيم الخاصة بكل ثقافة – من الثقافات الثلاث – ترتبط بشكل استثنائي بطرائق البحث المعمول بها لأن المصدر الذي تستقي منه البراهين والأدلة يساهم في تشكيل المعنى. إن هذا النص يلخص الإنجازات التي أفرزتها العلوم الاجتماعية والإنسانية، والتي أسهمت في فهمنا للطبيعة الإنسانية، ويشكك كذلك في الاعتقاد السائد الذي يدعي أن العمليات البيولوجية هي العامل الرئيسي الذي يحدد التغييرات في السلوك البشري.
