تتناول هذه الرواية حقبة الثمانينيات من القرن الماضي في ريف الساحل السوري. من خلال شخصيات الرواية نجد رزقاً وخليلاً رجلان يعملان بضمان الزيتون من أصحاب الكروم في منطقة صافيتا. تتغير حياتهما تماماً بعد إنشاء سد نهر العروس في منطقة قرب عيون الغار ثم يخسران عملهما بعد إغراق الأراضي التي تحوي أشجار الزيتون بمياه السد. ثم جاءتهما فكرة حريق بعض أشجار الزيتون وابتكار أسطورة تنين الخضر أو مارجرجس الذي عاد ليظهر من البحيرة، واختراع أن الأشجار التي يحرقها التنيّن لها خاصية الشفاء من الأمراض نظراً للقدسية التي يتمتع بها تنيّن الخضر أو مارجرجس. وهكذا يعود كلّاً من رزق وخليل إلى وضعهما السابق بل أحسن من ذلك. حيث بدأت الناس تتوافد للحصول على الخشب المقدّس للشفاء من الأمراض المزمنة وما يتبعه ذلك من فوائد مادية لرزق وخليل. نجد أيضاً شخصية الطفل أمين وأخته سمرا.
يصاب أمين منذ سنواته الأولى بمرض لم يعرفه الأهل ولا الأطباء، حين فقد الحركة في ساقيه وأصبح مقّعداً لايتحرّك إلّا بكرسي متحرك. وتم تشخيص حالته في العاصمة دمشق على أنه أصيب على الأرجح بمرض نادر يدعى متلازمة جيلان - باري. وهو مرض فيروسي المنشأ يجعل الشخص يفقد الحركة في الأطراف المحيطية دون أن يؤثر على الدماغ.
