قبل أن يُتمّ إيفان العشرينَ بقليل، أكّدت له عرّافةٌ من الحيّ أنّ عدم معرفته بأبيه أسوأ من أن يكون له أخ ميت.
"إنّ أخاً ميتاً يبقى في المطهر كروحٍ للأبد، لكنَّ أباك حيٌّ، أراه في عينيك، سيصلك رسول، ستُصغي إليه وستعمل بقوله، لأنّه سيُساعدُك، لا تَخَفْ، سيُساعِدُك". تُكرِّرُ، كما لو أنّ شيئاً عند إيفان يُزعجُها: البراءة التي تبدو حصانةً عند من لم يعودوا أطفالاً ويخلطون في إيماءتهم بين الرجل والمراهق.
تقول له إنّ الأمّ تهب الحياة لكنّ الأب يورَث، وتطردُه من الغرفة التي تشكل في أعماق زريبتها مستشاريَّتها.
يعتبرها إيفان مجنونة. لا يفهم هذه الجملة الأخيرة ويبقى أياماً يُحاول أن يُقْنِعَ نفسه بأنّ له أباً، مثل بقيّة البشر، وأنَّ هذا موجود، كما الله، في مكان ما.
بعد أسبوع يصل إلى بيته عجوزٌ له مظهر شحّاذٍ وعينان متوهِّجتان، يسألُ عن أمِّه. تستقبلُ جدَّتُهُ بثقل ظلّها المزمن الزائرَ في الباب وتُجيبه بأنّها ماتت منذ ثلاثة أشهر.
"من يعيش هنا؟" يسأل الرجلُ.
"أنا وحفيدي".
"وهل حفيدك هو الابن الوحيد؟".
