آلام صوفي، للكونتيسة دو سيغور، الصادرة سنة 1859، هي رواية مطلع الصبا بامتياز. بطلتها صوفي، الطفلة المغامرة بنت الأربعة أعوام، عمر الإدراك الحسي الحركي، وزمان التقلب في المحيط الأسري بحثا عن خصوصية للذات. لا تنفك هذه الشخصية الخارجة عن السرب، على امتداد اثنين وعشرين فصلا، عن القيام بأفعال جسورة، ممنوعة من قبل الكهول؛ فلا ترضخ لحكم عقوبة جراء جسارة سابقة إلا كي تتهيأ لاقتحام جسارة لاحقة، تهجس مرارا بكونها ستفضي بها إلى الزجر والتقريع، ولكنها لا تتخلى عن اقترافها. كأن كاتبتها توجه بإبداعها الروائي إلى حاجة الطفل إلى خرق قائمة الممنوعات الموضوعة من قبل الكبار، حتى يقدر على بناء شخصيته وتثبيت الثوابت فيها. إن صوفي المشاغبة نموذج الطفل التائق إلى التعرف على المحيط من حوله، حتى يقدر على تحديد الموقع الملائم له داخله.
