يناقش المؤلف لوسيان غولدمان في هذا الكتاب مجموعة من النظريات الفكرية التي وضعها فلاسفة العصر الحديث، من روسو، وهولدرلان، وباسكال، وديكارت، وسواهم، في محاولة منه لصياغة منظومة فكرية متراصة الأبعاد، ومضبوطة المعايير، انطلاقًا من رؤى سابقة ودراسات فلسفية كان لها أثرها على الفكر الإنساني ككلّ.
ويمكننا ان نقول أن الفكرة الأساسية من هذا الكتاب هى أن الأعمال الإنسانية تشكل دائمًا بنيات دلالية شاملة ذات طابع عملي ونظري انفعالي في آن واحد، وأن هذه البنيات لايمكن أن تدرس بطريقة وضعية أي أن تشرح وتفهم إلا من منظور علمي قائم على قبول مجموعة معينة من القيم.
ويسعى المؤلف من خلال الكتاب لاستخلاص الرؤية التراجيدية ووصفها واستخدامها في دراسة الخواطر ومسرح راسين، وأثبت المؤلف أنها تشكل من بين عناصر أخرى الجوهر المشترك للحركة الينسينية المتطرفة وأيديولوجيتها ولخواطر باسكال، ولفلسفة النقد عند كانط، وأخيرًا لمسرح راسين.
