لهذا المؤَلَّف بجزئيه أهميته التي تكمن في مكانة مؤلفه العلمية وإلى محتواه. بالنسبة لمحتواه فقد اشتمل على كثير من الأحاديث التي رواها المؤلف بسنده، مما يجعله مصدراً من مصادر السنة الأصيلة، والتي تفتقر إليها المكتبة الحديثة. ويعتبر هذا المؤلف مصدراً من مصادر الدليل الشرعي، بعد الكتاب والسنة، وهو الإجماع، حيث أن المؤلف حكى إجماع أهل العلم على كثير من المسائل الفقهية، وتزداد أهمية هذه الناحية بعد توثيق هذه الإجماعات، بذكر من وافق المؤلف من أهل العلم على حكاية الإجماع، أو بذكر من خالف في ذلك إن وجد.
وقد ضمّنَ المؤلف هذا الكتاب اجتهاداته الفقهية، وهو الإمام المحدث الفقيه، مما يعني أنه كتاب يضم بين دفته فقه أحد الأمة المجتهدين، الذي يحتاج إليه كل باحث في الفقه، خصوصاً وأنه الكتاب الوحيد من كتب هذا الإمام الذي وجد كاملاً ومشتملاً على آرائه الفقهية.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن المؤلف ذكر فيه كثيراً من آثار الصحابة، وكثيراً من اجتهادات الأئمة المجتهدين من سلف هذه الأمة في المسائل الفقهية، وهذه ناحية مهمة نظراً لأن المؤلف إمام في علم الخلاف؛ والمصادر المطبوعة في هذا الفن قليلة، وقد اشتمل الكتاب أيضاً على حكم المؤلف على كثير من الأحاديث تصحيحاً أو تضعيفاً، وبين ما في بعضها من إدراج وغيرها، إلى جانب ذلك فقد ضم الكتاب كثيراً من الأحاديث المسندة ومن خلال عملية التحقيق التي قام بها الدكتور عبد الله بن عبد العزيز الجبرين فإنه تمت الترجمة لكثير من شيوخ ابن المنذر ورجال أسانيده، الذين يحتاج إليهم في البحث عنهم الجهد الكبير.
