يستند هذا الكتاب إلى فرضية تقول بأن ليس من فرد ولا مجتمع بقادر على الإفلات من التواصل والإتصال. وبما أن الإعلام وعملية التواصل لم ينفصلا عن بعضهما بعضاً، طيلة قرنين، فإنه ليس ثمة إعلام في ظل غياب مشروع التواصل.
يعتبر دومينيك وولتون أن التحدي الحقيقي في عالم اليوم هو متعلق بالتواصل أكثر مما هو متعلق بالإعلام الذي يعتبر توافره غير كافٍ لإيجاد التواصل، بل إضافة إلى ذلك تقود ثورة الإعلام إلى حالة من التقلّب في التواصل، وتكون النتيجة عندئذ غير متوقعة. كذلك يعتبر الكاتب أن المشكلة لم تعد اليوم متعلقة بالإعلام وحسب، وإنما هي أكثر من ذلك مشكلة شروط يتوجب استيفاؤها من أجل تمكن ملايين الأفراد من التواصل، أو بالأحرى من التوصل إلى التعايش في عالم أصبح فيه كل فرد يرى كل شيء ويعلم كل شيء، وحيث الإختلافات اللسانية والفلسفية والسياسية والثقافية والدينية جعلت من التواصل والتسامح أمرين أكثر عسراً. وبكلمة، فإن الإعلام معني بالرسالة، أما التواصل فمعني بالعلاقة، وهذه مسألة أكثر تعقيداً. إن التحدي الأكثر تعقيداً الذي يواجهه البشر في هذا العالم هو تعلّم كيفية التعايش سلمياً فيما بينهم. إنهم يجدون أنفسهم مباشرة وجهاً اوجه، متماثلين للغاية ومختلفين للغاية، وحيدين في مواجهة أنفسهم ومعهم شياطينهم ومُثُلهم.
ولهذا السبب فإن الإعلام والتواصل يمثلان إحدى أكبر مسائل مطلع هذا القرن. يقول وولتون: "أن نتواصل يعني أن نقتسم ما يجمعنا وأن نسيّر الإختلافات التي تغرقنا. ولهذا السبب فإن الإعلام والتواصل يمثلان أكبر مسائل الغد المتصلة بالسلم والحرب".
