تمتاز لغتنا العربية بخصائص وأسرار ينبغى أن نحيط بها علماً، لكى نكون أقدر على فهم نصوصها النثرية والشعرية إلى جانب القرآن الكريم، والحديث النبوي الشريف. ومن بين هذا الخصائص: "الأسماء المشتركة" وهي التى لفظها، واختلف معناها كالعين. فالعين: عضو الإبصار.. والعين: ينبوع الماء.. والعين: الجاسوس.. والعين: ما ضُرب نقداً من الدنانير.. إلى غير ذلك من "مسميات" تشترك كلها فى كلمة "العين". ومن المشترك نوع يطلق على الشئ وضده!
وتسمى الكلمات من هذا النوع: "الأضداد" فتكون الكلمة الواحدة مؤدية عن معنيين مختلفين، يدل السياق على المراد منهما، فقد يتقدم الكلمة، أو يتأخر عنها ما يسلط الضوء على المراد بها، ويزيل اللبس عنها! وقد اهتم علماؤنا السابقون بجمع الكلمات التى أطلقها العرب على معنيين متضادين وتنافسوا فى جمعها!، وسوف يلمس القارئ الكريم ما بذل من جهد في خدمة النص، وتذليل ما قد يعترض الباحث والدارس.
