انقرضت الأسود من العالم و لم يبق سوى أسد واحد يعيش بالسافانا الإفريقية و لبؤتان تعيشان بمؤسسة FAP الأمريكية لحماية الحيوانات، تقرر المؤسسة تشكيل فريق يتكلف بإحضار الأسد إلى المؤسسة قصد تزاوجه مع اللبؤتين و تفادي انقراض الأسود.
تختار المؤسسة شابا أمريكيا من أصول إسبانية يدعى رودريغو كانيلا و لأنه مصاب بالسكري و متهاون في أخذ حقن الأنسولين تقرر حبيبته كارولين مرافقته في رحلته إلى إفريقيا.
تدور أحداث الرواية حول عملية إنقاذ الأسد و نتائجها على حياة رودريغو و كارولين و باقي الأعضاء.
