هذا كتاب مميز بين أقرانه وذلك لعدة أسباب نجملها يما يلي: أولاً: إن مؤلف هذا الكتاب قد تناول بالدراسة كل العناصر الجغرافية للبيئة الصحراوية الجافة وشبه الجافة، ويتضح ذلك من قائمة محتويات الكتاب. ثانياً: أنه قد أتيت للمؤلف فرصة زيارة المنطقة العربية وبخاصة ليبيا. ثالثاً: لقد حرص المؤلف في كل فصول الكتاب الثمانية أن يكون استشهادة على الظروف الجغرافية في المناطق الصحراوية متوازناً. فلم يترك منطقة صحراوية في العالم إلا وأعطاها قدراً من المعرفة كافياً لإبراز مكانها بين المناطق الصحراوية الأخرى، ورغم ذلك كانت أمثلته التطبيقية مستمدة في معظمها من الصحاري العربية.
رابعاً: لم يغفل المؤلف في دراسته لموضوعات الكتاب المقارنة بين صحاري العالم القديم وصحاري العالم الجديد مستهدفاً إيضاح الشخصية الجغرافية لكل منها وإمكانية تطبيق أساليب استغلال الأرض المستخدمة في إحداها على الأخرى، خاصة بعد استخدام التكنولوجيا الحديثة في استغلال الموارد المعدنية والزراعية، خامساً: كما لم يغب عن المؤلف في عرضه لكل موضوع من موضوعات الكتاب مناقشة المشاكل التي يمكن أن تترتب على استخدام الوسائل الحديثة في استغلال الأراضي مع محاولة التنبيه إلى إمكانية تجنب هذه المشاكل والتغلب عليها، كانت كل هذه من الأسباب التي دفعت "علي عبد الوهاب شاهين" إلى نقل هذا الكتاب إلى اللغة العربية حتى يمكن للمهتمين باستغلال الأراضي الصحراوية الإفادة منه، ولقد حاول أن يكون أميناً على نقله بأسلوب عربي واضح.
