كان السرير ذو الطابقين في وسط الغرفة وهناك قضبان معدنية بيضاء لضمان عدم سقوط من يستلقي في الطابق العلوي... قسم السرير المغطى بملاءة ملونة الغرفة إلى قسمين حيث يتموضع أمام الباب طاولة مكتب ومقعد وخزانة في حين ضم القسم الآخر خزانة من الدروج ونافذة مطلة على مبنى شقق من الطوب الأحمر مطابق لمبناهم، وكان إفريز النافذة منخفضاً لدرجة أنه يمكنك بسهولة أن تؤرجح ساقيك عليه والقفز على العشب. وهناك ملاحظات ملصقة بالمفروشات بأحرف مكتوبة بترتيب بقلم رصاصي وفوقها بقلم أسود: سرير... نافذة... مقعد... طاولة مكتب... باب. أما ورق الجدران الذي فوق خزانة الدروج فمغطى بهم... كبير... صغير... مرتفع... منخفض... دافئ... بارد... تم تحويل الخط العربـي بعناية لكنه يبدو عملاً مبتدئاً بما أن العديد من الحروف ملخبطة لكن الترجمة إلى النروجية مكتوبة على نحو صحيح لكن بقلم رصاص باهت.
كانت الأخت الصغرى التي تنام في السرير العلوي هي من وضعت الملاحظات التي لا تزين غرفة الفتاة فحسب وإنما تنتشر في أرجاء الشقة... مصباح... أريكة... ستارة... رف... لقد بدأت دروس اللغة العربية بأشياء دنيوية لكن الهدف منها روحي... قراءة وفهم القرآن كما أنزل على النبـي محمد.
أنا... هو... نحن... الله أكبر... اهدنا الصراط المستقيم!
في ذلك الصباح من شهر أكتوبر نزلت ليلى من السرير العلوي في وقت أبكر من المعتاد وارتدت ثوباً طويلاً وانضمت إلى أمها في المطبخ المحاذي لغرفة الفتيات... كانت سارة أول من استيقظ حيث تسللت من السرير ووضعت قدميها بحذر على الأرض لئلا توقظ صديق الذي لم يلحظ غيابها حتى افتقد دفئها وبرد السرير فنهض.
وقفت سارة عند طاولة الإفطار تائهة في أفكارها ثم نظرت متفاجئة إلى ابنتها التي بلغت السادسة عشرة من عمرها الأسبوع الماضي... ليلى تشبه أباها... نحيلة وطويلة.
قالت:
– يمكنني مساعدتك في تجهيز الصبيان.
