ينسحب المراهق توني ويبستر من علاقة حب جمعته بفرونيكا، ليجدها تصاحب أعز أصدقائه فوراً، فقد بعثاً له برسالة طالبين منه أن يتفهم الأمر. فأجاب على سالتهما، ثم عاش بعدها أربعين عاماً خالي البال، مرتاحاً، حتى بات رجلاً في منتصف عمره: تزوج وأنجب وتقاعد من عمله. ثم تصله رسالة تنسف تلك الأعوام الطويلة من عمره كلها؛ تعيده إلى علاقة نسيها تماماً فينفتح له باب لا يوصف سوى بأنه يقود إلى جحيم الندم. لقد ترك وراءه أموراً كبرت في غيابه وتوحشت مثل أشجار الغابة، وبات عليه العودة لمواجهتها.
