من جملة التآليف الأدبية لأبو الفرج جمال الدين بن العبري كتابه الموسوم بالسريانية بالقصص المضحكة، وقد نشره المستشرق الإنكليزي تحت عنوان بودج في أصلح السرياني سنة 1897 ونقله إلى الإنكليزية تحت عنوان The Laughable Stories، ولم يعهد لهذا الكتاب ترجمة عربية حتى وقع بيد محقق هذا الكتاب الأب "لويس شيخو اليسوعي" مجموع قديم يرتقي عهد نَسْخِه إلى ثلاثمائة سنة، وقد احتوى أقوالاً لقدماء فلاسفة اليونان، ثم كتاب إبن العبري الذي - بين أيدينا - منقولاً إلى العربية من دون ذكر معرّبه وفي هذا رأي للأب لويس اليسوعي يقول فيه: " وعندنا أن المعرّب هو إبن العبري نفسه الذي كان متقناً العربية كما كان يعرف السريانية واليونانية، ولعل هذا الكتاب هو كتاب "دفع الهم" الذي نسبه بعضهم إلى إبن العبري وخلطوا بينه وبين كتاب آخر بهذا الإسم ألفه إيليا الصوباوي (...) ويؤيد رأينا ما قاله ناشر النسخة السريانية في كتابه (آداب اللغة السريانية) أن إبن العبري قد نقل كتابه إلى العربية وهو الكتاب المسمى (دفع الهم). ولعله أبدل هذا الإسم بعد ذلك ... فدعاه بـ (الأحاديث المطربة) كما في هذه النسخة ..."
قسم الكتاب في نسخته العربية إلى ستة عشر فصلا، ذكر فيها أبن العبري أحاديث لفلاسفة اليونان، وحكماء الفرس، ثم لحكماء الهند، ثم لحكماء العبرانيين، ثم لبعض الملوك، ثم للمعلمين، ثم للزهاد، ثم للأطباء، ثم أحاديث على لسان الحيوانات، ثم أحاديث للأغنياء الكرام، ثم للبخلاء، ثم لأرباب الصنائع الدينية، ثم لبعض الظرفاء، ثم لبعض الجهال، ثم للمجانين، وأخيرا اللصوص. هذا وقد بلغ عدد الأحاديث المطولة في هذه النسخة (644) حديثاً.
من أحاديث الكتاب اخترنا:
سئل ديوجيس: أي فعل يعسُرُ على الإنسان؟ فقال: أن يعرف نفسه ويخفي سره.
قال أزدشير: إشغل نفسك في كل ما يجب لكي تمتنع مما لا يحب.
سُئل بعضهم ما هو الكرم؟ فقال: هو إعطاء المحتاج الحاجة في وقتها.
