رأى الشيخ "علي محفوظ" أن كثيراً من البدع والخرافات قد استحكم في نفوس الشعب حتى أبعدهم عن طريق الدين المستقيم، فأخذ يكافح ويجاهد ويذكر القوم بمحاسن الدين وقبائح البدع ولم يثنه عن سبيله ما أقامه دعاه هذه البدع من عراقيل وعقبات... وظل ثابتاً على عزمه حتى اقتلع الأوهام من القلوب وعاد بالناس إلى حظيرة الدين، وقد ألف في هذا كتابه العظيم الإبداع في مضار الابتداع" وهو هذا الذي نقلب صفحاته، ليتحدث فيه عن أصول البدع وفروعها وعادات العامة وأوهامها طبق ما قرره مجلس الأزهر الأعلى من مناهج التعليم في مجموعة الوعظ والخطابة بالجامع الأزهر الشريف سالكاً فيه سبيل الاعتدال فكان وسطاً بين الإفراط والتفريط ورتبه على مقدمة وبابين وخاتمة، في المقدمة مبحثان الأول: إخبار الصادق المصدوق بغربة الدين، والثاني الحثّ على التمسك بالدين. وإحياء السنة النبوية والباب الأول في النظر في البدع من جهة الأصول والقواعد وفيه سبعة فصول، وجّله مستمد من كتاب الاعتصام للشاطبي، والباب الثاني في النظر في البدع من جهة فروعها وفيه اثنا عشر فصلاً-بدع المساجد-بدع المقابر والأضرحة-بدع الجنائز والمآتم-بدع الموالد-منكرات الأفراح-بدع الأعياد والمواسم-البدع التي تقع في العبادات-بدع أرباب الطرق المتصوفة-بدع الاعتقادات-بدع الضيافة والولائم-بدع المعاشرة والعادات وخرافات العامة وأوهامهم-وفي كل فصل من هذه الفصول مسائل كثيرة لخصّ فيها كتاب "المدخل" وزاد عليه ما حدث بعده من منكرات العادات وبدع الضلالات. إن ما يميز هذه النسخة التي بين أيدينا هو أنها جاءت مصحّحه ومنقحة، عكف فيها المحقق إلى تخريج الآيات القرآنية المستشهد بها في الكتاب والى تخريج الأحاديث النبوية مع عزوها إلى مظانها في كتب الحديث المشهورة.
