جاليليو جاليلي: ولد عام ١٥٦٤م وتوفي عام ١٦٤٢م، وهو فيلسوف إيطالي وعالم في الفيزياء والرياضيات والفلك قام بدور كبير في الثورة العلمية.

Book Description
يرجع الفضل لجاليليو في إطلاع العالم على أهم جانبين من جوانب العلم الحديث؛ مناهجه البحثية ومعيار الصدق، وذلك لأنه كان أول شخصية هامة تدافع عن حق العالم في إجراء أبحاثه عن طريق المشاهدة والتجربة دون أن يتأثر باعتبارات بعيدة عن العلم مثل السياسة واللاهوت. هاجم جاليليو أدعياء العلم في عصره، ووجه كتاباته لعامة الناس من معاصريه، وكانت مساندته لعلم الكون عند كوبرنيكوس في مواجهة المعارضة الشديدة للكنيسة، واختراعه للتلسكوب، وملاحظته لظواهر مثل المذنبات والبقع الشمسية، وآراؤه غير التقليدية كواحد من فلاسفة العلم؛ كانت كلها اهتمامات محورية في حياته العلمية، وموضوعات لأربعة من أهم مؤلفاته. تظهر هذه الموضوعات في هذه الترجمات الجديدة المحكمة لستيلمان دريك، مع مقال تمهيدي يفسرها في ضوء التاريخ وسيرة حياة الكاتب.
