تروي "أغنية ناراياما" قصة امرأة عجوز تعيش في قرية يابانية نائية، وتؤمن بالأعراف والتقاليد السائدة فيها. وتلبية لهذه الأعراف والتقاليد يجب أن يحملها ابنها الى قمة جبل ناراياما لتواجه هناك قدرها الأخير والموت، بعد أن ناهزت السبعين عاماً. وراء هذا التقليد الذي يبدو مروعاً بالنسبة لأفكارنا الشرقية، تكمن حقيقة هي أضعف بكثير من أن تدعم كبار السن. وإذا كانت المرأة العجوز قد استسلمت لقدرها لكي تشعر ببعض السعادة نتيجة وفائها لتلك القواعد التقليدية، فإن ابنها يشعر بالأسى العميق حيال إنجاز هذه المهمة الشاقة، وينشب في داخله صراع بين عقله وقلبه. وعندما يصل بأمه الى أعلى القمة التي سيتساقط عليها الثلج قريباً، يبدو المشهد من قمة الجبل مأساوياً في هدوئه الحالي، إلا أنه سيتفجر فيما بعد بثورة مشاعر الابن.
صاغ "فوكازاوا" روايته صياغة لا يعرف معها القارئ أين يبدأ الواقع ولا أين ينتهي الخيال. ومن هنا كانت عظمة هذه الرواية التي ترجمت الى معظم لغات العالم.
