الآغا كلمة معناها في اللغة التركية الرئيس أو الشيخ أو السيد، وكانت تطلق على خصبان القصر السلطاني إبان الدولة العثمانية، التي توسعت في استخدام الخصبان البيض "آق آغالر" والخصبان السود "قره آغالر" في خدمة الحريم السلطاني وحراسته. وكان رئيسهم يسمى "قيزلر آغاسي"؛ أي آغا البنات، الذي يلقب بصاحب السعادة، وكانت رتيته تلي الصدر الأعظم وشيخ الإسلام آنذاك.
يبرز هذا الكتاب للقارئ أهمية الدور الذي لعبته هذه الفئة في تاريخ الدولة، نتيجة التوسع في استخدامهم الذي أدى إلى تغلغلهم في شتى دوائر الحريم، بل تطلعوا إلى ان تكون مقاليد أمور الحكم في أيديهم، ليس هذا فحسب، بل تعرض المؤلف أيضاً إلى عدد من مراكز القوى في تلك الدولة، ومدى تباين نفوذها علواً أو هبوطاً، ومنهم الحريم السلطاني وغيرهن من الجواري الحسان وتسلطهن على السلطان من ناحية وعلى الصدور العظام من ناحية أخرى.
ويعتبر الأسلوب السردي البسيط من أهم الخصائص التي يتمتع بها مؤلف الكتاب، بما يضفي نوعاً من التشويق الذي يجذب قارئه إلى متابعة الأحداث التاريخية التي يصف فيها أحوال الأناضول وإستنابول مع هذه القوى المختلفة، والتي غالباً ما يوثقها بالمصادر التاريخية العثمانية السابقة عليه؛ ومن ثم فإن كتاباته في مجملها غالباً ما تلتزم بمبدأ الحيدة المطلقة غير المبالغة والتي يصور فيها جانباً كبيراً من الحقيقة.
