ولكى يوضح "أوكتافيو باث" وحده الشعر الحديث اختار من تاريخه الحوادث التى يرى أنها وثيقة الصلة أكثر من غيرها: ولادة هذا الشعر فى الرومانسية الإنكليزية والألمانية، تحوله إلى الرمزية الفرنسية والحداثة الأمريكية الإسبانية، وأخيراً، وصوله إلى الأوج فى الاتجاهات الطليعية للقرن العشرين
