قام مؤلف هذا الكتاب بالإطلاع على كتب المعاصرين في الإملاء والانتهاء من قراءة ما وقع في يده منها، ثم بدأ بعد ذلك بجمع مادة هذا البحث الإملائي الهام والمفيد من كتب اللغة والنحو والصرف، وصياغتها بأسلوب سهل قريب، فرجع إلى ما كتبه المتقدمون، ووجد فيه مادة جيدة وخاصة في كتب النحو، فقد اهتم النحويون بهذه المسائل اهتمامًا كبيرًا وذلك لعلاقة هذه المسائل بالنحو والصرف، ومنهجه في ذلك أنه يذكر القاعدة ثم يذكر ما ورد فيها من النصوص عند المتقدمين ويوضح ذلك بالأمثلة ويشير إلى المراجع التي أخذ منها هذه الأقوال، كما أنه يذكر الخلاف في المسائل الإملائية والرأي الراجح منها وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في مدخل وستة فصول، المدخل في بدء الكتابة والنقط والحروف، والفصل الأول في الهمزة، والثاني في الألف اللينة، والثالث في الوصل والفصل، والرابع في زيادة الحروف، والخامس في حذف الحروف، والأخير في تاء التأنيث.
