كنت كبير الموظفين في وزارتي ولم أكن وزيرًا، وكان الفرعون هو الوزير الحقيقي الأول والأخير، ولكن ذلك كان الحقيقة في كل الوزارات الأخرى. كل ماحدث أني أدركت ذلك من البداية وتصرفت وفقًا له بحيث يكون الفرعون هو متخذ القرارات الكبرى وبالتالي المسئول عنها لا أنا في حين كان الوزراء الآخرون يتحملون هم مسئولية قرارتهم، وهكذا ظللت وزيرًا لعشرين عامًا. مرت المضيفة باسمة أمام مقعد الدكتور هاشم ومالت عليه. في يديها صينية فضّية عليها مظروف أبيض مغلق.

يتناول عز الدين شكري في هذه الرواية حالة مصر قبل ثورة 25 يناير من خلال تسعة مصريين في حالة سفر دائم في محاولة للفرار من واقعهم الذي ملأه الجهل والفقر والكوارث الطبيعية، والذي أدى إلى انهيار الدولة الفرعونية (حيث تجري الأحداث في زمن تخيلي) نتيجة لفشلها في مواجهة تلك المشكلات مما أدى إلى تحللها وتعفنها
