"حدوته" قد تتشابه مواضيع بعض هذه الأساطير والحكايات الشعبية بين مختلف الشعوب... بل قد تتشابه أحداثها بصورة تزيد القارئ ثقة في وحدة الإنسانية ووحدة الجوهر الأساسي للتفكير الإنساني وتصوراته للخير والشر والفضيلة.
ولقد اهتم الكثيرون من الأدباء والكتاب المعاصرون بدراسة مختلف ألوان التراث التي عرفتها شعوبهم، و"سليمان مظهر" من هؤلاء الأدباء الذين عنوا بدراسة أساطير الغرب ولذلك عمد إلى تجميعها في كتابه هذا، محاولاً تفسيرها للوقوف على الدوافع الحقيقية التي رافقت ظهورها. ومن الأساطير التي عنى المؤلف بدراستها هرقل، اختطاف برسيفون، نجمة السماء، الثوب الخفي، دقات الطبول، الإرث، الساحر وابنته...
يسرد الكاتب مجموعة من الأساطير الغربية والحكايات والتي تعتبر نوعا من الفلكلور أو القصص الشعبي ويروى فيها تراث البشرية من عادات وعقائد وقصص من العصور القديمة التي يرويها مؤلفيها تبعا لنظرتهم الخاصة للأشياء.
