أحلام بيتي بلاكسلاند كبيرة، كبيرة جداً هي ليست تلك الرؤى المتفرقة، والمضطربة التي تداهمها في نومها، بل الأحلام التي تأتي لتطمئنها قبل أن تنام، في سريرها الخلع، الجاثم على الأرض في شقة أبويها المثلجة، إنها أحلام حيّة، وثاقبة. أحلامٌ تعانق عالم الموضة، والأقمشة والثروات، بكل تأكيد، العال الذي يتلاشى فيه الواقع البائس لأسرتها الفقيرة حتى يندثر تماماً، ولكن، ما لم تحلم به أبداً، هو أن تكتشف، عشية عيد ميلادها التاسع عشر، أنها حامل من عشيقها، وهو رجل متزوج. أمضت شهر شباط، وهي تعدّ الأسابيع وتعيد عدها بطريقة استحواذية، أرجعت الزمن رأسها، وحاولت أن تجد التواريخ الدقيقة. أخدت معدتها تنقلب بسبب روائح الطعام، وأصبح نهداها حساسين، وفي بداية آذار، علمت بيتي أن طفلا من هنري ماك كونيل ينمو في بطنها. ذاك المساء ، وصلت إلى النادي، وكأن شيئا لم يكن ضحكت لمزاح تيدي وايلدر، وتشنجت حين ضغطت على خصرها يد هنري الدافئة، كتبت غثيانا سببه دخان سيجار، وتركت الجرعة الأولى من الكوكتيل المكون بصورة رئيسة من الجن طعما لاذعا ومرّا على لسانها، ومع ذلك، لم تكف عن الإبتسام، فهي معتادة جدا على ردم الحفرة الموجودة بين ما تشعر به والطريقة التي يجب عليها أن تتصرف بها.
