عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته مجموعة متفرقة من المقالات التي كتبت في أوقات مختلفة بين 1932-1969 يصل بينها موضوع مشترك هو التفاعل بين العوامل النفسية والعوامل الاجتماعية. كما ويضم الكتاب بعض النصوص القديمة التي سبق ونشرت بالألمانية، هذا إلى جانب مقالتين طويلتين الأولى جاءت تحت عنوان "أزمة التحليل النفسي" وفيه تم تحليل المحددات الاجتماعية التي لعبت دوراً في تطور التحليل النفسي، أما النص الثاني فحمل عنوان "الدلالة الحالية لنظام الأمومة". إن الطابع النقدي لهذه المقالات يضفي عليها مزيداً من الفائدة للمتهمين بالدراسات النفسية والاجتماعية في هذا الميدان، كما يطرح وجهة نظر تخالف المألوف السائد في فهم التحليل النفسي وفي فهم طريقته العلاجية بشكل خاص.
