كان أرطغرل بن سليمان شاه قائداً لإحدى قبائل الترك النازحين من سهول آسيا الغربية إلى بلاد آسيا الصغرى (الأناضول)، وكان راجعاً إلى بلاد العجم بعد موت أبيه الذي غرق عند اجتيازه نهر الفرات قرب قلعة جعبر على بعد 250 كم جنوب غربي مدينة ماردين التركية ومازال قبره هناك.
شاهد أرطغرل جيشين مشتبكين فوقف على مرتفع من الأرض ليمتع نظره بهذا المنظر المألوف لدى الرُحّل من القبائل الحربية، ولمّا آنس الضعف في أحد الجيشين وتحقق انكساره وخذلانه إن لم تُمدّ إليه يد المساعدة، فدَبّت فيه النخوة الحربية ونزل هو وفرسانه مسرعين لنجدة أضعف الجيشين، وهاجم الجيش الثاني بقوّة وشجاعة عظيمتين حتى وقع الرعب في قلوب الذين كادوا يفوزون بالنصر، لولا هذا المدد الفجائي، وأَعمَلَ فيهم السيف والرمح ضرباً ووخزاً حتى هزمهم شرّ هزيمة، وكان ذلك في أواخر القرن السابع للهجرة النبوية.
