يعكس هذا الكتاب الذي ألفه "لانكستر هاردنج" في فصوله حصيلة تجربة ومعرفة إكتسبها الكاتب حين عمل مديراً لدائرة الآثار العامة الأردنية خلال خمسينيات القرن الفائت، كما شغل قبلها وفي عام 1936 منصب مفتش للآثار في الأردن، وبعد أن شكلت الضفة الغربية جزءاً من المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، وأصبح "هاردنج" مسؤولاً عن آثارها، اتسعت معرفته بآثار جنوبي بلاد الشام.
وعليه يبحث الكتاب في موضوعات تغطي مساحة واسعة من جنوبي بلاد الشام، اشتملت على مواقع أثرية هامة نذكر منها: أريد، وأم قيس، وجرش، والكرم، والبتراء، ومعان، وأم الجمال، وأريحا، وخربة قمران.
