اتخذت من عمر بن الفارض- وهو واحد من هؤلاء الصوفية الذين أذعنوا لسلطان العاطفة- موضوعاً لهذا البحث الذي حاولت فيه أن أكشف عن سيرة الرجل وحياته العامة والخاصة, وما يتصل بهذه من أحوال وبتلك من أحداث, وعن حقيقة حبه الذي قضى حياته هاتفاً به مرتلاً لأنشودته, وعما عسى أن يكون في هذا الحب من المعاني الروحية والمثل الأخلاقية والمنازع الفلسفية, لا سيما أن حب هذا الشاعر الصوفي مسألة من أدق المسائل وأشدها غموضاً وتعقيداً, اختلف الناس حولها في زمان الشاعر نفسه, واختلفوا فيها بعد زمانه, وما يزالون مختلفين فيها حتى الآن.
ومن هنا جاء بحثي في ثلاثة أقسام: تناولت في القسم الأول ترجمة ابن الفارض وأطوار حياته, وروح العصر الذي عاش فيه, ومكانه في بيئته ومبلغ تأثره بعصره. وحللت فيه حياته الصوفية, وعرضت في القسم الثاني لحب ابن الفارض وطبيعته, والكشف عما إذا كان هذا الحب كله حباً إلهياً, أم حباً إنسانياً, أم هو مزاج من الحبين, وعكفت في القسم الثالث على دراسة حب شاعرنا من الناحية الفلسفية, فحاولت أن أحلله إلى عناصره الصوفية التي تنطوي على بعض المعاني الميتافيزيقية والأخلاقية وما إلى ذلك.
