لعبت إيران أدوارا كبرى في تنامي ظاهرة الإرهاب الإقليمي في السنوات الأخيرة، وبدا ذلك واضحا من خلال سلوكها في الأزمة السورية بعد نشوب الثورة على الرئيس بشار الأسد في السابع عشر من مارس بالعام 2011م، الذي زاد من فرص تنامي الجماعات الإرهابية ليس في الشام فحسب، بل في الإقليم بوجه عام، إذ عملت على تكوين نحو 50 فصيلا مسلحا يضم ما قرابته 60 ألف مقاتل ينتمون إلى عدد من الدول، وتبرز أنماطهم المذهبية من خلال تسميات تلك الفصائل التي تتراوح بين "الزينبيون" و"أبو الفضل العباس" و"لواء الإمام زين العابدين"، وغير من الأسماء ذات الدلالات المذهبية الطائفية الشيعية.
