«مر يوم ثم يومان، ولم ير للنوم طعماً إلا غفوات قليلة.. وكيف ينام بمعدة خاوية تزأر زئير الأسد من شدة الجوع؟
يشعر أنَّ ذئبًا ينهش في أحشائه، لقد أنهكه الجوع؛ حتى صار لا يقوى على الحراك، تسارعت نبضات قلبه، وارتخت مفاصله، وجفّ حلقُه، وزاغ بصره، وماجت الأرض تحت قدميه، فأسند ظهره إلى الحائط، وذرفت عيناه؛ لأنه تذكر أنه سيموت جوعاً، وسط أمةٍ عنه في ذهول، تذكر أمةً ضنت عليه بكسرة خبز أو حبات أرز كانت فيها نجاته، تذكر ترف المترفين، وإسراف المسرفين، تذكر هوانه على الناس، وهنا بدأ يتهاوى إلى الأرض……»
