"كيدو مُحامي طلاق يُشارف زواجه علىٰ الانهيار بِسبب الانفصال العاطفي. إضافةً إِلىٰ أزمة مُنتصف العُمر الّتي تلوح فِي الأفق، تنقلب حَياة كيدو رأسًا علىٰ عقب بِسبب عودة موكِّلة سابقة تُريد منه أَن يُحقق مَع رجل ميت – زوجها المُتوفىٰ مؤخرًا. فبعد وفاته اكتشفت أنّه كان يعيش كذبة كبيرة : اسمه، وماضيه، وهويته، تنتمي إِلىٰ شخص آخر.
يجذب التحقيق كيدو إِلىٰ لغزين مُثيرين : معرفة هوية الزوج الحقيقية، واكتشاف المزيد عَن الرجل الّذي تظاهر بِأنّه هو. ومَع كُلّ اكتشاف جديد يزداد لدىٰ كيدو هوسه والإغراء بِمحو حَياة شخص ما لخلق حَياة جديدة.
يبحث كيئتشيرو هيرانو فِي الرواية عَن الهوية، وغموض الذاكرة، والحكايات الّتي نحيا ونموت بِها، والتصالح بين مَن كُنت تأمل أَن تكونه ومَن أصبحته فِي الواقع."
