تطرح الرواية سلسلة من الأحداث الغامضة تقتل البشر في يوم ميلادهم بطرق غريبة، وتعود بهم إلى الحياة مرة أخرى بعد عشر سنوات من تاريخ موتهم في مدينة أخرى، سبب تلك الأحداث كتابٌ قديم سُميَّ لاحقاً "بأحجية الموت" مكتوب بعدة لغات قديمة تم وضعه من قبل "لوكار" ليعود إلى الحياة في كل مرة بعد موته. يقرر بطل الرواية "إمران" البحث في عمليات الموت الغريبة والمُتشابهة في مدينته حتى يُصادف عجوزا غامضاً يشرح له تاريخ الأحجية ودورها الأساسي في قتل البشر، ثم يسعى جاهداً لإيقاف عمليات القتل التي تحصل في مدينته، إلا أنه يجد نفسه أمام أحجية معقدة، صعب حلها، ليصبح إيقاف الأحجية والمعضلة الرئيسة في حياته.
