تحكي الرواية قصة حب جمعت بين شاب و فتاة، تحديا الظروف ليكونا معًا. لكن رفض الأهل حال دون ذلك، فافترقا رغم الحب الكبير. مضت السنوات، وتزوج كل منهما، وأسسا حياتين منفصلتين.
مرت الحياة، ولكن ما لم يتوقعه أحد هو أن الحب سيعود ليفرض نفسه، لا بين الحبيبين القديمين، بل بين أبنائهما. تبدأ القصة الأولى بحب بين إبن و إبنة من العائلتين، ليقف الأهل مجددًا في وجه هذا الحب. ثم تتكرر القصة مع الإبن الثاني، و تنتهي بشكل أسوأ.
لكن الحب لا يستسلم بسهولة. تنشأ القصة الثالثة، وتواجه الرفض ذاته، غير أن الإصرار هذه المرة كان أقوى. يموت الأب، ويتمكن الحبيبان من تجاوز العقبات، ويكلل حبهما بالزواج.
في النهاية، تثبت الرواية أن الحب الحقيقي قد يتأخر، لكنه لا يموت، وأن الأحقاد القديمة لا يجب أن تتحكم في مصائر الأجيال الجديدة.
