ولد في بيروت سنة 1888، وعمل في الصحافة في لبنان ومصر وسورية. ألف كماً كبيراً من الأعمال الأدبية والتاريخية والروائية، وكان له الفضل في الإشراف على طباعة الكتاب في بيروت. توفي سنة 1960.

في الساعات الأولى التي تقطعت بعد وفاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وبيعة أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه خليفة للمسلمين، ظهرت على مسرح السياسة الإسلامية ظاهرة جديدة لم يكن يفطن أحد إليها. فقد طالب الإسراع بالأمر ودعوا إلى أن يكون السلطان فيهم، واجتمع الأنصار يبحثون أمرهم فيما بينهم، ومن يكون خليفة رسول الله منهم وأما الهاشميون فقد ظلت الفكرة في قلوبهم ينتظرون الفرصة السانحة للظهور لا يدور بمخيلة أحدهم أن هناك بين المسلمين من ينافسهم هذا الحق.
وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض المؤلف لقصة الخلاف الذي نشب بين شخصيتين لهما مكانتهما في الإسلام وتاريخ العربية. كما أن أثر هذا الخلاف لا يزال بيناً ظاهراً قوياً حتى اليوم، والمؤلف يعرض له بشيء من الاعتدال ومن ضبط النفس مع التحري عن أصدق المصادر وأوثقها.
والكاتب يؤكد في هذا الكتاب أن مسألة الخلافة كانت سبب كل ما جرى من نزاع وانقسام في الإسلام، إذ شق هذا الإسلام إلى شقين وأدى أخيراً إلى امتشاق السيف، كما هيأت الأساس التاريخي لتطور عقيدة الإمامة، وقد أدى الاختلاف على الخلافة بين المسلمين إلى اختلاف آخر يتعلق بحقوق الخليفة وامتيازاته.
