ِروَايَة مَمْلُوءة بالحَوَادث والأَسْرَار ذَات المَوَاقِف الفَذَّة ما كنتُ أتصوَّرُ أَنَّنِي سأعيش حتى اليوم الذي أستطيع منه كتابة هذه القصة عن ملك فرنسا غير المتوج … دون أن أجرح إحساسات أولئك الذين اشتبكت أسرهم بمختلف فصول هذه الفاجعة الأليمة. لقد وقعتْ بين يديَّ تفاصيل هذه القصة بطريقة غريبة… ولمَّا كُنت قد وعدتُ منذ بضع سنوات، بألَّا أَنْشُر ما نمى إليَّ منها… فإنني — وقد تحررت من وعدي هذا — أخشى ألا أجد من يصدق القصة … إنني عليمة بأنَّ الكثيرين سوفَ ينكرونَها، وأنِّي أُقِرُّ بأنَّ في بعض حوادثها غرابة وطرافة تجعلانها أقرب إلى خيالات الوهم منها إلى وقائع التاريخ، ولكن على الرغم من هذا كله، فالقِصَّة في جميع فصولها واقعية حقيقية، لا يَشُوبُها الوهم ولا يطغى عليها الخيال.
