يغطي الكتاب، بأسلوب علمي رصين ومشوق، مرحلة طويلة من الزمن، حوالي ثمانية قرون، في أقل من 300 صفحة، وذلك ليس بالأمر الهين، لأن الصعوبة التي تواجه المؤرخ في مثل هذه الحالات هي كيف يمكن الاختزال، على اعتبار أنه يجد نفسه أمام زخم من الأحداث، ومادة مصدرية كثيرة جداً، وفي حالة المؤلف الذي نقدمه، اليوم، جل المصادر المعتمدة هي من عيون تاريخ الأندلس، وكلها تقدم معلومات قيمة جداً، وبالتالي كيف نتمكن من الاستغناء عن بعض ما تقدمه من معلومات، ونترك البعض الآخر، وهذا لا يتسنى إلا للباحث المتمرس. وقد تمكن المؤلف من تجاوز هذا المشكل بذكاء كبير، عندما طرح إشكالية، هي جوهر الكتاب، بقي وفياً لها في كل فصول الدراسة، هي مآسي الأندلس. فحاول البحث في هذه المآسي، ليس فقط بحث الدارس المشخص، وإنما الدارس الذي يحاول أن يقدم من خلالها العبرة، وهذا ما يعبر عنه بما يلي: " ضاعت الأندلس بعد أن كانت محطة عبور العلوم إلى أوروبا مدة غير يسيرة من الزمن، وكان ضياعها بأيدي أبنائها في الغالب، فما عسانا نقول، وهل لنا أن نعتبر"؟
