العلم علمان، علم التوحيد والصفات وعلم الفقه والشرائع. والأصل في علم التوحيد التمسك بالكتاب والسنة ومجانبة الهوى والبدعة كما كان عليه الصحابة والتابعون والسلف الصالحون رضوان الله عليهم أجمعين، الذين أخفاهم التراب، وآثارهم بتصانيفهم باقية في هذا الباب.
وقد صنف السرخسي مؤلفه المبسوط والذي جاء ضمن ستة عشر جزءاً في المسائل والأحكام الفقهية على مذهب الإمام أبي حنيفة. وقد عمل لهذا الغرض على شرح المختصر المبسوط الذي ألفه محمد بن الحسن الشيباني الذي صنف فيه ما فرّع الإمام أبو حنيفة. وجاء تأليف شرح المختصر للإمام السرخسي حيث لم يزد على المعنى المؤثر في بيان كل مسألة اكتفاء بما هو المعتمد في كل باب من أبواب الفقه وقد بدأ بكتاب الصلاة ثم الوضوء... وهكذا إلى أن أتى أبواب الفقه كاملة بالشرح والتوضيح من خلال رجوعه إلى الكتاب والسنة وأقوال الصحابة والتابعين والسلف الصالحين رضوان الله عليهم أجمعين.
