أبو حيان التوحيدي، شيخ متصوف عرف بأنه أديب الفلاسفة وفيلسوف الأدباء، من أعلام القرن الرابع الهجري، عاش أكثر أيامه في بغداد. امتاز التوحيدي بسعة الثقافة وحدة الذكاء وجمال الأسلوب، كما امتازت مؤلفاته بتنوع المادة، وغزارة المحتوى، فضلًا عما تضمنته من نوادر وإشارات تحتمل تأويلات عديدة. نعرف أن التوحيدي ولد في بغداد وتوفي في شيراز، لكننا لا نعرف توقيت الميلاد والوفاة بالتحديد، لكن المؤكد أن التوحيدي كان حيًّا عام 400 هجريًّا كما ذكر بنفسه في أحد رسائله. امتهن التوحيدي في بداياته مهنة الوراقة مما زوده بكم هائل من المعارف. يقع الكتاب الفذ، الإشارات الإلهية، في رسائل تقوم على المناجاة أو الدعاء وعلى مخاطبة شخص ما. ويبدو التوحيدي وكأنه يمد يده إلى شخص مثله، مريد في طريق الهداية والنجاة. نجد نصائح بالأخذ بالفضائل، والخلق القويم، وتأمل نعم الخالق التي أنعم بها على الإنسان، وبيان كيفية السعي للرضا الإلهي. وتبعًا للتفاوت في الحالات النفسية يتراوح حديث التوحيدي بين اللين والشدة، ويقدم لنا تعريفًا لبعض القضايا، وإفهامًا لبعض الأمور، في سلوكيات طريق المريد والسالك. ويمدنا الكتاب بمفهوم واضح للتصوف حسبما كان يؤمن به التوحيدي، الذي استطاع أن يمزج في إشاراته الصوفية بين كتابة النماذج للرسائل الصوفية وبين التعبير الوجداني الذاتي، فارتفع بأسلوبه إلى درجة عالية لم يبلغها متصوف قبله، ولم يبلغها التوحيدي ذاته في أي من مؤلفاته التي وصلتنا.
